Vocational Assessments and Evaluations

In cases where return to prior employment is not feasible, vocational assessments provide the structured clarity needed to chart new occupational directions. These evaluations combine interviews, skills and interest inventories, aptitude testing, and file reviews to produce an objective vocational profile.

Advanced Transferable Skills Analysis (TSA)

Our Advanced Transferable Skills Analysis (TSA) is a comprehensive analysis designed to identify transferable skills that an individual possesses to analyze how those skills align with the requirements of other occupations.

When performing a TSA, our certified vocational assessor will review the following information:

  1. Work history and job descriptions

  2. Educational and training background

  3. Transferable skills

  4. Impact of medical conditions including limitations, restrictions, and abilities

  5. Vocational interests

  6. Other information and documentation as required

Using the data gathered through the TSA, the assessor will review current labour market trends to identify occupations that align with the client’s background. Both direct-entry roles and short-term training opportunities may be explored, offering a comprehensive overview of available pathways so you can make an informed decision for your client.

The information provided in a TSA can help to:

  • Identify suitable occupations based on the client’s residual vocational profile

  • Outline pathways that the client will be successful with, taking into account their occupational interests

  • Expedite return-to-work efforts and ensure longevity

  • Reduce unnecessary retraining by identifying careers that require little to no additional education or training

Unlock Deeper Claim Insights

The IVRS Advanced TSA goes beyond the capabilities of a standard TSA by delivering a high-impact, decision-ready report to support sustainable return-to-work planning. Our pre-COD screening decision matrix optimizes claim outcomes and risk management by delivering informed recommendations based on the client’s Maximum Medical Recovery and restrictions/limitations.

Vocational Evaluation (VE)

When a return to pre-disability employment isn’t possible, a Vocational Evaluation (VE) provides a clear, comprehensive path forward. This in-depth assessment is ideal for exploring new or alternate career directions, particularly in complex cases where a TSA will not provide enough insight.

Our VE examines a full scope of the individual’s vocational profile, including transferable skills, aptitudes, work values, interests, and functional limitations. Unlike a TSA, which relies on existing information, the VE incorporates standardized vocational testing. We review educational background, employment history, specialized certifications, and English language proficiency, while also identifying any retraining needs to maximize re-employment potential.

VEs provide a well-rounded vocational profile that helps guide decisions around retraining, job readiness, and long-term employability, backed by clear, evidence-based recommendations.

Cognitive-Vocational Evaluation (COG-VOC)

When cognitive limitations are a primary factor in a disability claim, a Cognitive-Vocational Evaluation (COG-VOC) offers essential clarity for planning next steps. This comprehensive assessment evaluates the impact of an individual’s cognitive functioning to determine realistic and sustainable vocational options.

The COG-VOC is particularly effective in cases where cognitive limitations may limit work capacity or affect long-term employability. It provides an integrated view of cognitive and vocational factors, helping to assess readiness for return to direct-entry work, suitability for retraining, or the need for further intervention.

Psychological-Vocational Evaluation (PVOC)

When mental health is a primary factor in a disability claim, a Psycho-Vocational Evaluation (PVOC) offers key insights regarding the impact of an individual’s mental health condition on their ability to work. Conducted by a registered psychologist, this comprehensive assessment evaluates the individual’s psychological functioning, aptitudes, abilities, and personality traits to determine realistic and sustainable vocational options.

The PVOC is particularly effective in cases where mental health symptoms may limit work capacity or affect long-term employability. It provides an integrated view of psychological and vocational factors, enabling informed decisions regarding readiness for direct-entry work, suitability and potential for success with retraining, or the need for further interventions.

Employment Exploration for Educators Assessment (3E)

Educators bring a distinct set of skills, qualifications, and experiences, but when returning to the classroom is no longer an option, identifying alternate career paths can be complex. The 3E Assessment (Employment Exploration for Educators) is designed specifically for teachers facing career transitions due to medical or psychological limitations.

This fully customized vocational assessment analyzes the individual’s complete work history, including teaching experience, educational background, specialized certifications, and transferable skills. It also considers stated interests, hobbies, and functional limitations to ensure that any alternate employment recommendations are both realistic and sustainable.

In combination with formal aptitude and interest testing, we identify direct-entry occupations that align with the individual's abilities, qualifications, and gainful wage requirements. Each recommended role is supported by region-specific labour market research to validate local availability and support future job search planning.

Occupational Therapy Assessment & Treatment Services

Our Occupational Therapy services provide timely, evidence-informed assessments, clear recommendations, and targeted treatment to support functional recovery. Using an integrated vocational rehabilitation lens, we deliver actionable, work-focused insights that help referral sources effectively support individuals to return to work safely and sustainably and remain at work long term.

Medical and Functional Screening Assessments

Particularly valuable early in the claim process, these assessments help establish evidence-based treatment plans to support recovery and reduce time away from work. They are especially valuable for individuals without a primary care provider or those showing limited progress. Each assessment analyzes current function, limitations, and treatment history to identify effective next steps for recovery.

Mental Health Assessment and Screening Services

Our mental health services support rehabilitation planning and return‑to‑work decision‑making through targeted consultation, assessment, and treatment expertise. All services are delivered by regulated clinicians and informed by evidence‑based practices. Customized service options are also available to address complex or unique vocational rehabilitation and organization requirements.

Mental Health Consultation

The Mental Health Consultation is conducted by a vocational rehabilitation professional with mental health expertise. The process includes a comprehensive file review, an interview with the client, and the collection and review of standardized patient data. Using this information, the clinician performs a predictive analysis to evaluate psychosocial factors, functional status, overall readiness for rehabilitation, and clear treatment direction.

Psychology Assessment

The Psychological Assessment is a clinically informed evaluation conducted by a Registered Psychologist to identify an individual’s current level of psychological functioning and factors that may affect an individual’s ability to return to work. The process includes a file review, an interview with the individual, and report with recommendations outlining evidence-based psychological support or treatment pathways.

Psychiatry Treatment Consultation

The Psychiatry Treatment Consultation is conducted by a psychiatrist to confirm an individual’s diagnosis and treatment plan. The assessment includes a file review, a diagnostic interview with the individual, a review of treatment history, and consideration of medication management and evidence-based treatment needs.

Functional “Abilities” Screening Assessments

  • Physical

  • Cognitive

    • This screening evaluates an individual’s current cognitive functioning in relation to the cognitive demands of their job. Through structured assessment and standardized tools, this screening assessment offers insight into areas such as memory, attention, processing speed, and executive functioning. The findings help inform return-to-work planning and support the identification of cognitive barriers that may impact recovery, accommodation needs, or treatment direction.

Note: While the terms Functional Capacity Evaluation and Functional Abilities Evaluation are often used interchangeably, IVRS distinguishes between the two, as each assessment provides distinct and separate insights into an individual’s functional abilities.

Functional Capacity Evaluations

Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCEs) are comprehensive assessments that objectively measure an individual’s functional ability either in general or relative to a specific job.  Conducted by qualified clinicians (including occupational therapists, physiotherapists, kinesiologists, and chiropractors), these evaluations use standardized testing, observed performance, and real-world simulations to establish valid, reliable data on functional ability

  • Physical FCEs examine endurance, strength, mobility, dexterity, postural tolerance, and capacity using simulated tasks tailored to essential job demands.

  • Cognitive FCEs assess executive functioning, memory, processing speed, attention, and problem-solving to determine an individual’s cognitive readiness for work or daily living demands.

Typically spanning one to two clinic days, FCEs provide robust data on current abilities and limitations, consistency of effort, and tolerance for sustained work-related activities.

FCEs provide a clear, evidence-based report that benchmarks performance against job requirements or normative standards, and includes actionable recommendations, such as return-to-work readiness and graduated return to work planning, recommended accommodations, and further treatment needs as applicable.

Independent Medical Evaluations

We provide access to a nationwide network of fully licensed medical experts across Canada, including occupational medicine physicians, psychiatrists, neurologists, and clinical psychologists, to conduct Independent Medical Evaluations (IMEs).

These services deliver unbiased, objective medical opinions, free from prior treating relationships. Each evaluation includes a comprehensive medical history review, clinical exam, and appropriate diagnostic testing, followed by a clear, evidence-based report with clinical diagnoses, prognosis, treatment recommendations, and guidance on functional capacity.

This is often valuable for:

  • Disputed or unclear medical information affecting claim decisions

  • Complex or long-duration disability cases

  • Return-to-work clearance or accommodation guidance

  • Legal or administrative proceedings (e.g. workers’ compensation, personal injury)

Fitness to Work Assessments

Fitness‑to‑Work evaluations assess whether an individual can safely perform essential job duties (medically, cognitively, or psychologically), with or without accommodations. These assessments determine if an employee is fit, unfit, or fit with modifications, and support workplace accommodation and transitional planning.

IVRS’s evaluations are:

  • Delivered by senior clinicians with relevant specialty credentials and occupational-context expertise

  • Evidence-based and defensible for use in claims and dispute resolution

  • Nationwide and virtual, ensuring timely access and efficient reporting
